After one year away, Kevin Greene is back home.
A simple padlock fastened by the bank locks 14-year-old Kevin and his mother out of their northern Nevada home. While his mother is devastated, Kevin’s wish just came true: he would get one final night in Dyre, biking across the dusty blacktop with the buddies he left behind instead of loading furniture onto a truck.
After dropping by Dyre High to surprise his old classmates, Kevin overhears a lesson on “The Dyre Prophecy.” A local legend that claims a citizen can summon a healing rain if the right rituals are performed. But who cares about school? Word on the street is that Alex Freeman is missing. Again.
Kevin and three of his friends form the “Alex Freeman Rescue Battalion” (A.F.R.B.) and decide to look for Alex at: (1) the town overpass, (2) the never-ending construction site, and (3) the rodeo. But Kevin and the A.F.R.B. get more than they bargained for on their odyssey.
Dirtbike races, car chases, secret affairs, and a curfew-obsessed police force turn their rescue mission into something bigger. Kevin must confront what it means to come home to a town that moved on without him.
He’ll have to figure it out fast, because Kevin and the A.F.R.B. are Alex Freeman’s only hope. And if the prophecy is real, Kevin may just be the last hope for all of Dyre.
